Well done to 3rd and 4th classes on their participation in the Arklow Music Festival. The class were entered in the Action Song category and faced some stiff competition. Miss Woodroofe and the other teachers in the school were so proud when they were awarded 2nd place! The song they chose to sing was 'Count on Me' by Bruno Mars.

Club Gaeilge

Club Gaeilge has been a great success in the middle room with a full house a every week! We did lots of different fun activities like arts and crafts, games and some PE as Gaeilge and it was super to see so many children attending! We are already looking forward to Club Gaeilge next year!

Chess Tournaments

Thank you to Mrs Spencer who kindly organised a knock out chess tournament for 3rd - 6th classes. We really enjoyed taking part. Well done to Sean Ryan who was a finalist along with Rowan in 6th. Well done to everyone that took part.

Following on from this tournament we were inspired to hold another, this time assigning points to each child. The winners of this tournament were Sean Ryan and Sean Cannon who had tie breaker match the following day. The tie breaker resulted in Sean Ryan being named the winner! Thank you so much to Paige from Rathdrum Girls School who came along to play with us and to Larry Roe who helped Miss Woodroofe organise the event!

November in the middle room.

We have been so lucky to have Ms. Nolan working with us for the past 3 weeks. Ms. Nolan has been completing her teaching practice in our classroom and we have really enjoyed having her. We did so many fun things with her including a project on electricity in our local area. We also built models of all the shops on Rathdrum Main Street! Thank you so much for all your hard work Ms. Nolan and we wish you all the best in your teaching career! We know you're going to be a fantastic teacher!

Some of the fun things we've been getting up to with Ms. Nolan!

We had a really interesting visit from David Swift from Heritage in Schools. David was a mine of information all about World War Two and had so much to tell us. He talked to us all about WW2 and showed us some really interesting artefacts. We had a quiz at the end and the lucky winners got to try on some uniforms and weapons that were actually used during WW2!! We couldn't believe our luck! Thank you David for your visit!

Our school also took part in Science Week. We held a mini science fair in our classroom and taught 5th and 6th classes all about what we have been learning about electricity. We also visited the science fair in the senior room and had great fun trying out all their experiments. We had 2 really interesting speakers, the first was Aisling Kirwan who spoke to us about the effect food has on our bodies and showed us so healthy and delicious recipes. We then heard from Dr. Ross O'Neill who talked about tinnitus and the life changing device which he pioneered. We really enjoyed science week and can't wait for next year!

3rd and 4th classes really enjoyed taking part in the skip hop workshop last week in school. We learned lots of new skills and got even more exercise! Well done to everyone for being super skippers. Sean C., Charlotte, Sophie, Aidan, Alex and Jacob were chosen to demonstrate the skills we learnt in front of the whole school! They did a super job and everyone was really impressed!

September and October 2017

September and October in the Middle Room!

We have had a very busy first half term in 3rd and 4th class and have been doing lots of fun and interesting work.

We learnt all about the Stone Age in History! We had a chance to do our own 'cave' drawings under our desks and made mini entrance stones for Newgrange. We were all amazed to find out that Newgrange has been around for 5000 years (longer than the pyramids in Egypt!). We also learnt a lot about Ancient Greece and the many things we now have thanks to those clever Ancient Greeks!

3rd and 4th class got to go to Avondale and take part in the Cross Country relays. We trained hard before hand and even though we didn't bring home a medal we had great fun and tried our best!

Larry Roe has been kind enough to come into our classroom this term to teach chess to 4th class. We are really enjoying learning how to play chess and some of us have even been brave enough to take on Larry himself! Thank you so much to Larry for giving us his time and expertise and we look forward to learning even more next term!

Rugby coaching also started this term and we have been learning lots of new rugby skills from Ben from Leinster Rugby.

Finally we had a table quiz to mark half term. We welcomed Ms. Sherlock's class into the middle room and had lots of fun answering  all the questions!
